Fortas Chamber Music with PUBLIQuartet
PUBLIQuartet brings its wide-ranging, toe-tapping Rhythm Nation to D.C. in a program that reimagines the string quartet through the pulse of American music. Newly commissioned works stand alongside music by Daniel Bernard Roumain, Jlin, Henry Threadgill, Jeff Scott, Fodé Lassana Diabaté, Mazz Swift, and Eddie Venegas, drawing on traditions that span hip hop, jazz, Afro-Cuban music, electronic sound, and contemporary classical composition. Anchored by tributes to Janet Jackson’s iconic album Rhythm Nation, the concert connects cultures, generations, and artistic traditions through the ensemble’s adventurous spirit and virtuosic playing.
Einstein on the beach
Some artworks change history, affecting everything that comes after them. Some change us, altering the way we perceive the world. Einstein on the Beach does both.
First staged at BAM in 1984 and revived in 1992 and 2012, this revolutionary work returns in a 50th Anniversary Concert presented by the artists who know it best—The Philip Glass Ensemble, led by longtime music director Michael Riesman—with a special artistic installation by Tony and Olivier Award-winning artist and designer Es Devlin inspired by Glass’s early writings about his mesmerizing music.
Introduced at the 1976 Festival d’Avignon by visionary director Robert Wilson and iconic composer Philip Glass—who hatched their collaboration after meeting at BAM in 1973—this otherworldly opera has captivated audiences with its luminosity and propulsion, permanently rewiring the rules of storytelling, stagecraft, and composition. Hypnotic, transcendent, and unlike anything before or since, Einstein on the Beach is an experience that demands to be met on its own terms.
Hildegard Commission Concert 2026
The Hildegard Commission Concert returns with groundbreaking premieres from our four winners, today’s most exciting rising composers—che buford, Līva Blūma, Fjóla Evans, and Maria-Eduarda Mendes Martin—along with works from our four brilliant finalists. The namesake of our commission, 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, used vivid, intricate miniature drawings in her prophetic books to bring complex spiritual visions to life. For this year’s commission, our winners have composed music that directly responds to a distinct illustration from Hildegard's codices. These historic images will be brought to life through dynamic animations and projections from a visionary visual designer, transforming the performance space into an interactive ecosystem of sight and sound. Step into a multi-sensory, immersive environment inspired by the extraordinary legacy of the 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen.
